Astrid.

Screw this. I thought we were getting out of here. On the plus side, the numbness disappeared the moment the Hooded Legionaries laid hands on me. On the downside, the Hooded Legionaries did lay hands on me. And now these ruffians had me one on either side, and I was too weak to shake them off. I couldn’t stand seeing it end like this.

Martus at least was unfazed by the turn of events. I didn’t know how long he knew these guys were holograms, but he didn’t seem surprised at the realization. He wasn’t devastated. Then again, neither was I. My reaction dwindled to a distinct annoyance at our fate. If our enemies weren’t actually here, then how could we fight them off? I was out of inspiration, and even my handsome green hero was lost for words.

“Is this the part where one of us has a brilliant idea?” I asked.

“I checked already, but the idea kiosk is fresh out,” he said.

The Legionaries backed away from us, and I rubbed my arms where they had grabbed me. They stood in a circle around us. Then Captain Bluestar stepped back and flung a drone into the air. The drone circled around us, eventually hovering over our heads, and then it sent down a cone of blue light, an electric field like the one I had been immune to in our cell below. I sucked in my breath and pretended to play along. Then I clasped my hands around Martus’s arms. He was warm to the touch, and his muscles were so firm I was impressed that he wasn’t trying to lash out. He put his hand over one of mine and patted it comfortingly.

Captain Bluestar paced around us in broad strides. She was the only one of the Hooded Legionaries not to wear an actual hood, making her unmistakable as she marked us in some kind of inspection.

“Pax?” she asked Martus.

“Oh yeah.”

She spat, and the saliva fell just short of our cone. “You should be ashamed of yourself. We expect to get a significant bounty for you.” Then she turned to me. I pressed my teeth together and relaxed my shoulders for a more casual look. “And as for you, you’re the girl whose face is on all those wanted posters. The only question remaining is whether the Romero would pay more for you dead or alive.”

“Alive. They want to know how I did it,” I said. “Plus, it’s really a matter of reputation. We don’t want to claim that people have died here, on this luxury liner. Keep me alive and you’ll look like responsible... stewards... of the vessel for the time it was evacuated.”

“She has a point,” said one of the Legionaries, but Bluestar held up a hand to silence him. “We won’t kill you... yet,” she said. “We’ll let you sit around a while, possibly blame you for the mess here. People don’t like to challenge our word.”

I nodded.

Over my head I noticed that one of the lights was flickering.
